This is a great find, but mainly because it shows just how big of an idiot Abby Hoffman was. His bizarre antics led average Americans to have mostly negative associations with the "counter culture" movement. And that may have been his intention right from the start. In John... more

I consider this book to be a kind of urban worst case survival guide. Granted, much of the ideology is pure garbage and some of this stuff is just plain stupid (read the section about pot). But regardless of your political/philosophical bent knowledge is power, whether it's a good scam or how to make a pipe bomb or how to get food for free.

This is a great find, but mainly because it shows just how big of an idiot Abby Hoffman was. His bizarre antics led average Americans to have mostly negative associations with the "counter culture" movement. And that may have been his intention right from the start. In John Lennon's book "Skywriting By Word of Mouth", Lennon says that Paul Krassner once told him that Jerry Rubin and Abby Hoffman were agents working for the FBI, whose mission was to discredit the counter culture movement by making hippies look like idiots, with Rubin and Hoffman being the main two idiots. Whether this is actually true or not, both of them had an extremely negative effect on the movement. They couldn't have hurt it more if they had been trying. And maybe they were. It would certainly explain a lot of things. At Woodstock Abby Hoffman ran up to the microphone and started a political rant in the middle of a set by the Who. Pete Townsend came up from behind him and whacked him in the back of the head with his guitar, at which point Abby Hoffman took off running at light speed into the press pit. One of the organizers of the festival said he had never seen anyone move so fast, and he thought Abby Hoffman must have been out of his mind. But it was probably Hoffman's paranoia kicking in. He may have thought his FBI cover had finally been discovered. Who knows? But his ideas are just as bad today as they were back then. Most of "Steal This Book" consists of advice on how to be a parasite feeding off of working society.
