Dan Gilbert is a psychology professor at Harvard, and author of Stumbling on Happiness. In this memorable talk, filmed at TED2004, he demonstrates just how poor we humans are at predicting (or understanding) what will make us happy. (Recorded July 2005 in Oxford, UK. Duration: 22:02) The title of his book Stumbling on Happiness is rather appropriate. It is an interesting video about happiness as we perceive it as humans based on experimental data. He proposes that synthetic happiness is equal to natural happiness although American culture sees it as inferior. I reccomend watching the whole thing.

In order to create synthetic happiness, we must be under the impression that we are not free to choose. I am not willing to give up freedom for the pursuit of synthetic happiness. Uncertainty may not create bliss, but being bound to the choices all made for me doesn't sound like a fulfilling life. At least my regrets are my own, instead of feeling good because I was "fated" to feel good - I had no choice but to make peace with a bad situation...

I can't say enough about how much I like this video...This video captures the essence of what is profoundly true about the great mystical spiritual traditions (Buddhism in particular) *without* all the useless religious part...This is a truly scientific contribution to the understanding of happiness which is at the heart of human spirituality...

Two talks on the secret to human happiness. Probably best taken with the dalai lama's 'art of happines'. Download the audio.

An interesting talk about happiness, or more specifically "Scinthetic Happiness"... To me, what he speeks of sounds like a coping mechanism we use to make ourselves happier when we dont get what we initially wanted.

A scientific case for buddhism... (which does not mention buddhism.)
