This is Email Theory 101. If you don't own & use your own domain for email--i.e., *not* gmail/Yahoo!/AOL, your work addy, your alumni email--Jared lays out why (and how!) you should.

Gmail, Yahoo, & Windows Live: Do You Want This Brand For The Rest Of Your Life? OUCH!major..Most people don't own their email's domain (i.e., the part after the @ symbol). Many exclusively use an email address that was provided to them by their internet service provider or place of employment. This is a wake up call: don't wait any longer to own and control your email.

Nice way to brand out your email account.

Author: Actually I'm a SUPER huge fan of Gmail. I actually recommend in the article to use Gmail for your Domain for mail hosting, especially given its spam checking capabilities and IMAP support. All I'm saying is that OWNING YOUR ADDRESS is crucial...but you can use gmail to get the best of both worlds.

There is no reason to have your own domain name over using Gmail. In fact, using Gmail is probably the best choice for anyone wanting email. What're they up to now, 6.5 GB of space? And their spam protection? One of the best out there?
