Broad, detailed descriptions like this just encourage people to throw kids into categories, creating expectations of the child that could be pretty harmful, or at least counter-productive. Aside from that, just about anyone can fit into at least a few of these criteria, so this just makes a bunch of people sit around getting to think about how gifted a child they were and give themselves a smug little pat on the back for being born so damn "smart" or making kids that are. Guess what? We're all human. You label a kid "gifted" and expect him to do great, and he/she'll either live up to because it's expected it or crash and burn from too high expectations. If you label a kid the opposite, they'll probably do the same thing: fail because they're expected to.

Hmmm...I've never understood the term "gifted". It's so broad. Is it a nice way of saying you're arrogant but it's fairly justified? Is it a person who needs a different way of being cared for? I don't think I'll ever know.

"and the gifted child... shall be singled out for depersonalization by inadequate staff and routine peer reinforcement." I laughed out loud.

Explains me growing up. And I was always told I was a bad kid, then I went home and fiddle with my electronics more, at the age of eight of course.

Everyparent want s their child to be special. An exceptional child can still have discipline problems, especially if his parents treat him as if he is special.

Wow! This is as if someone personally knows both of my children. Both of them are very bright and have qualified as gifted students.
