Another sight we saw on day 4 was the Tate Modern. They have an installation by Carsten Höller which consists of slides between the floors in their great hall. The kids went down the smallest slide, which only went one story, but it was still a little too much for the 6-year-old. The 8-year-old really wanted to go down the slide from the 5th floor all the way down, but luckily they had given away all the tickets for the day already. We had a little walk through some of the galleries, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how much the kids actually enjoyed looking at the art. Picasso, Miró, Calder, they enjoyed looking at them and hearing about them from art-idiot me. Perhaps I'll be able to take them to the Met soon.

If you go to London and don't visit the Tate, you've missed one of this great city's greatest attractions. Do not miss it!!

I love the place, well worth a visit in person - the building alone is astounding.

The Tate Modern is the reason I got turned around on London. Can I tell you a story? okay.

I was ill-informed about Britain--my entire Irish-American family is a bunch of Brit-haters, the whole Oliver Cromwell, potato famime, penal colonies, Northern Ireland occupation, etc. etc. I was brought up on lullabys of "A nation once again" and "four green fields". This is my family and our history. So I was a little scared and filled with contempt when I went to London by myself waiting for a friend to continue on to the continent. Found out there was an exibit of American landscape, my favorite school of painting, at the Tate modern. Good Lord above! The overwhelming feeling of joy I felt in this museum--seven rooms of ecstasy, emotion and passion. It was as though a committee was formed six months in advance of my arrival.

"Potter is coming to town! We need to impress her and change her mind about our country and city! What should we do?" "Let's put on an exhibit of Cole and Church and all her favorites so she'll like us!"

I swear, I've never in my life been so moved by art as at this museum. And my eyes were opened then to enjoy the rest of the city. I am tolerant now, yay. Three cheers for Tate!
