Dealing with negative people: From the page: I looked at the person in a different light. That person was there to teach me patience, to teach me tolerance and I had to remind myself of that. I was there to ask him a simple question `Why is your world so dark?' It is wonderful how things come into your life when you need them most. I needed this post.

This is def the case when you are working in the field but when you encounter it constantly in your personal life, tolerance is a balancing act! Just as most mechanics want to go home and, not work on other people's cars let alone their own, or painters, etc...a counsellor doesn't want to go home or be in any relationship they feel that they are still at work! We are all human and, as counsellors we need to look after ourselves also, otherwise we burn out! To be effective in such a role, you need to create a life outside of it that doesn't drain you, it's known as 'self care'.

From the page: "I recently had a chance to talk to someone like this in depth and had to hold it together long enough to ask myself "what is this person teaching me about myself?"and the next question is "What am I teaching them about themselves?" The answers were quite surprising to me."

Remember this piece of advice. you'll need it. From the page: "If someone who has a dark outlook on life is talking to me and I am giving them vibes that I don't like talking to them this is going to re-enforce their belief about themselves that nobody likes them, the world is a dark place etc etc."
