It is still amazing how many parents don't learn internet basics. Make sure your kids are safe online.

Fail. Never even states the primary safety issue. Remain anonymous. These suggestions demand a heavy handed approach. Instead of trusting you with whatever they are doing, they have to worry about you monitoring them AND all their friends. If you want your kids to trust you, explain the necessity for anonymity and trust them. All the "safety" issues this article touches on are related to unsavory information, not physical safety. This isn't about safety, this is about censorship.

From the page: "I was at a talk at my sonâ€s school the other night and I am still amazed at how many parents donâ€t know what their children get up to on their computers. "

From the page: "Remember that older children are curious about sex and relationships and the internet can be a safe way to explore this. If you find inappropriate content on the computer and it is not illegal and disturbing donâ€t worry too much. Try and remember what you were like as a teenager and how curious you were." There are alot of these lists around for new-to-the-internet parents. However, this is the first list I've read that says anything along these lines. So a huge plus in my book.

We have to think the unspeakable before we can protect our children and there is no better place to try and hide than behind a telephone line or satellite dish with hundreds of miles separating us.

Sure, learn how it works, but don't censor the internet for your kids. Actually, go right ahead. That way they'll learn how to hide what they're doing like pros. That's important these days--keep the government out of your business. If your nine year old doesn't have a four gigabyte, NSA-proof, encrypted partition hidden with a kernel hack, protecting gobs of porn right under your nose, she's doomed to prison camp life when she's older--probably for writing an email about something like democracy in plain text. *shudder*

If my parents spied on me when I was a third grader, I know my online life would be twice as interesting and four times as hidden. But I keep unencrypted junk all around and I'm sloppy with my anonymous browsing habits. I'm such a damn slob--waiting to get arrested. I wish my parents spied on me.

The Internet - for the most part - can be a very dangerous place for kids. Responsible parenting can go a long way.
