as too often happens when we give free rein to authoritarians, the motives here are sound (crime deterrence) but the delivery is that of a puerile primitive primate. The fix (given the absence of common sense on the enforcement side) would be proper Democratic Jury control. Oh, and Trusted Surveillance of course. But you already knew that...
