From the page:

"Some Muslim cashiers at Target refuse to handle pork, setting off another debate over the place of religion in society."

Is this any different than a conservative Jew asking someone else to turn on the lights for the Sabbath? In the past, those who had moral reserves about aspects of American life, did what other conservatives, Jews, Amish, and such did. They backed away from full participation in American life. Finally, some Muslims decide they don't want to marginalize themselves. What are we going to do about it?

I'm with Miss Ophelia on this one. If they are religiously incapable of performing the duties of their job, then that's their choice - and their loss. And, Tetsuo60056, that goes for fundamentalist pharmacists, too. If someone's faith prevents him or her from performing the duties of their job, or in any other way inhibits their daily activities, maybe it's time for the person to wonder why their religion has so much interest in telling them what not to do. Or, better yet, drop religion altogether and make your own choices.

Customer service and faith clash at registers By Chris Serres and Matt McKinney, Star Tribune staff writers Last update: March 14, 2007 - 12:16 AM> from the article ... Beryl Dsouza was late and in no mood for delays when she stopped at a Target store after work two weeks ago for milk, bread and bacon. So Dsouza was taken aback when the cashier -- who had on the traditional headscarf, or hijab, worn by many Muslim women -- refused to swipe the bacon through the checkout scanner. "She made me scan the bacon. Then she opened the bag and made me put it in the bag," said Dsouza, 53, of Minneapolis. "It made me wonder why this person took a job as a cashier." In the latest example of religious beliefs creating tension in the workplace, some Muslims in the Twin Cities are adhering to a strict interpretation of the Qur'an that prohibits the handling of pork products. Instead of swiping the items themselves, they are asking non-Muslim employees or shoppers to do it for them. It has set off a firestorm of comments -- more than 400, as of Tuesday evening -- on the Star Tribune's community blog, www.buzz.mn. People called the newspaper from as far as Tokyo to voice their opinion.
