aestheticart discovered 3 months ago- "The Bather",1915, painted plaster and paper maché on an inner wire frame, height 50 cm, Alexander Archipenko. Paper Maché was, at one time, a very popular material used for a large variety of objects from decorative boxes to carriage panels and even furniture. Then it went out of vogue and was relegated to the class room and hobbies. Though there is a certain comeback today, what with artists being ever more interested in recycling etc., it is still more often used to make gimmicky, fun items than anything that could pass as art with a capital "A". And yet it is flexible, easily available and even cheap, all considerations uppermost in the mind of Alexander Archipenko back in 1915 when he made this beautiful painted sculpture.
