So I kind of started SSDP. In 1997/98 I started the Rochester Cannabis Coalition on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology. We were a bunch of neo-hippie activists and ended up getting into a major battle with the President of the school. Long story short, I got ganked by the schools... more

So I kind of started SSDP. In 1997/98 I started the Rochester Cannabis Coalition on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology. We were a bunch of neo-hippie activists and ended up getting into a major battle with the President of the school. Long story short, I got ganked by the schools campus safety squad (http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/041/shea.shtml) and booted out of school. The following year the RCC changed their name to Students for Sensible Drug Policy. My pal Mike Eck came up with the name- he wanted to have a name that was FOR something- sensible drug policy. My best friend Kris also got ganked by the school and moved to Washington, DC the following year to intern at the Drug Reform Coordination Network (http://stopthedrugwar.org) where he also worked to take SSDP national. He found some amazing people who adopted the cause as their own and it's since grown into a professionally run powerful entity making a real difference in the world. They have over a hundred very involved chapters, thousands of dedicated members, and a solid base of funding. I'm a very proud grandfather. :D

From the page: "Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) is a grassroots movement of students who know firsthand that the War on Drugs causes great harm to individuals and to society. Start a chapter on your campus this semester and fight back against the government's Drug War attacks on youth!"

2007 could finally be the year that SSDP succeeds in pressuring Congress to reinstate financial aid to college students with drug convictions. But we can't do it without your help! Please take 30 seconds to send a letter to your legislators!!
