What is an earth oven and why on earth would anyone want one. An Earth Oven or Cob Oven is a fairly primitive cooking device. It is a wood fired oven made from a mixture of mud or clay, sand and straw, which is what "cob" is. It is built to retain the heat from a fire built inside of it. An earth oven can be used to bake bread, cook pizzas, or slow cook stews, roasts, or anything you would cook in a conventional oven.

Building an earth oven, aka cob oven, is fun, educational, and provides you with a lasting utility for cooking outdoors in any weather. It is also a perfect first project if you are interested in one day building a cob house or other structure. Cob houses have been around for centuries, are durable in all kinds of weather, keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. There beauty is limited only by your patience and imagination, for they are sculptures you build with your hands. This Squidoo lens had excellent links for learning to build your own cob oven.
