During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ulterior motive. She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews, (being German). Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of her tool box she carried, and she also carried in the back of her truck a Burlap sack, (for larger kids). She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids/infants noises. During her time and course of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught and the Nazi's broke both her legs and arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it, and reunited the family. Most, of course, had been gassed. The kids she helped were placed into foster family homes or adopted. In 2007 Irena was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and guess what? She LOST. Al Gore won for doing a slide show on Global Warming.

People are missing the point about the Nobel Prizes, or for that matter, systematic/institutional awarding of anything at all. Here's the point you've been missing, I brought it to your doorstep, it's yours, take it. Qualitatively speaking, we first have reach a consensus: it is impossible to evaluate or grade Peace. If there is anything to bitch about, it should be either the necessity or the will to establish an annual jury duty for the purpose of judging and substantially awarding (read: $$$) those who did the most to further peace that year. Speaking on behalf of the necessity, it is absolutely unacceptable to institutionalize peace within such an indefinite periodic framework with such definite monetary turnover, which inevitably implies the 'expected absence' of peace for many years to come (that also tells you something about the modern world and the civilization in general). If looked at from the perspective of the desire or will to award such instances, it looks even more perverted; wouldn't that desire imply a certain 'civilized' morbid fascination with peace efforts during the usual war and occasional destruction? How can we live with ourselves knowing that we would --like-- to see more heroic shit any given year and be happy about it for a while, desensitized beyond all hope to the reality of never-ending war? Whatever the reasons might be, the function of awarding and awards remain the same, to regulate and coordinate the policy within the scope of the awards. So an award committee such as the Nobel Foundation, which operates on a global scale would naturally want to command the global policy making. By that token, a 98 year old has-been who have once done the same ol' in the service of peace and all things cuddly is recognized by being a nominee but will not be awarded. Awards go to those who matter now, as it didn't matter yesterday. Global warming, as advertised and marketed by Al Gore, a man of certain political standing, means more to us who need to be saved from our on natural holocaust of well above 2500 people who are alive and well at the moment, thank you. Therein lies the rationale of choosing this over that, within what seems to be supremely irrational and immoral. But that's just me. What do *you* think? (That almost convinces you that I give a shit about what you might want to say, innit?)

Irena Sendler (in Polish also: Irena Sendlerowa; de domo Krzyanowska; February 15, 1910 - May 12, 2008) was a Polish Catholic social worker. During World War II, she was a member of the Polish Underground and the egota Polish anti-Holocaust resistance in Warsaw. She helped save 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto by providing them with false documents and sheltering them in individual and group children's homes outside the ghetto In 2007, considerable publicity accompanied Sendler's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Although failed nominees for the award are not publicly announced by the Nobel organization for 50 years, this publicity focused the spotlight on Sendler and her wartime contribution. The 2007 award was presented to Al Gore. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irena_Sendler

This is terrible, using a tale of heroic resistance against Nazi oppression as a way to make a cheap political point.

I have a new hero. A hero, to me at least, is someone you aspire to emulate despite your easy existence and their hardships.

It's hardly fair to take away the achievements of Al Gore, but this woman was a hero, I'm sure all the candidates for the Nobel peace prize have contributed to try and make the world a better place. With something like the Nobel peace prize all of these people have been formally recognised. So it's good people are raising awareness of the heroism of Irena Sendler, but don't use it to make cheap shots at other great people.
