A nice idea - it would be great if the "pixels" were smaller

I gather this one has been around for awhile but I am always among the last to see cool things. Still, in case you haven't, this is an art installation of polished wood pieces that are attached to cameras and computer and 'reflects' the image of those standing before it. The artist says it 'explores a line between digital and physical'. It is also a clever piece of work on many levels.

Artist statement: Wooden Mirror - 1999 830 square pieces of wood, 830 servo motors, control electronics, video camera, computer, wood frame. Built in 1999, this is the first mechanical mirror I built. This piece explores the line between digital and physical, using a warm and natural material such as wood to portray the abstract notion of digital pixels.

It looks great. I've got to see it for real.

Daniel Rozin's Wooden Mirror uses a tiny, hidden camera and custom software to tilt 1500 wooden "pixels" to reflect the viewer's image. The fairest of them all.

From the Site: Mechanical Mirrors: The 4 mechanical mirrors are made of various materials but share the same behavior and interaction; any person standing in front of one of these pieces is instantly reflected on its surface. The mechanical mirrors all have video cameras, motors and computers on board and produce a soothing sound as the viewer interacts with them.
