ooooooo The Speckled Band was my favourite Holmes when i was a kid - it had just the right amount of mystique and whodunnit to both enchant and scare the crap out of a ten-year-old. nowadays i much prefer the more high-brow ones (although i admit Baskervilles still gives me the creeps).

I love short stories. In today's world where we all have less time, they are even more appropriate. Perhaps we will even see times where movies will become short stories too!

Great site for short stories you can read several of thosse and ... they wont take too long. And that is particurlarly good if you take in consideration the fact that you'll be reading them from a monitor screen.
