The 10 Avatars of Lord Vishnu
So what is an Avatar?
According to this introduction, it is
- a new personification of a familiar idea
- "the embodiment of hope"
- "the incarnation of evil" (ie, a descent into mortal realms)
- "the very avatar of cunning"
and in particular,
the manifestation of a Hindu deity (especially Vishnu)
in human or superhuman or animal form.
The Buddha, eg, is an avatar of Vishnu.
