- You could put a similar linear generator between the cable and the buoy - there is a lot of power available in wave energy. Heat could be captured without the need for the reflector. Encapsulate the hot side of the engine in a glass covered dome, paint the hot side of the engine black, it operates like any hot-water solar collector.

Carl-001 rated 2 months ago- Good idea. Stirling engine technology is one of the most underutilized, yet most efficient forms of generating electricity. A system like this could work quite well, however, you would need a way for the parabolic dish to track the sun to make it efficient. This might prove difficult in the wind and waves.

- why is this tagged "space exploration"?

91KP rated 3 months ago- Good idea perhaps, might be some unforeseen problems with ocean surface temperature if deployed widely.

tbhurst rated 3 months ago- Great. Very simple illustration of how a Sterling Engine operates.

commerican rated 3 months ago- Neat idea, always liked Stirling engines. Wonder what happens when the bowl gets water in it. Drainage hole?

- I like the use of a Stirling engine right next to water like that... but you lose a lot of efficiency by not being able to track the sun as it moves through the sky. A moveable weight of some sort could change the centre of mass and alter its flotation.
