I don't know about salt being an antidepressant. I use salt only on eggs or potatoes which I rarely eat, but can't do without the salt.

slightly different perspective. It's not that salt is an antidepressant but that the withdawel from salt may cause depression like symptoms http://www.familyhealthguide.co.uk/could-salt-be-a-natural-antidepressant.html

Salt is addictive in the same way food and water are. The craving of salt is a natural drive, not an addiction.

Salt is one of the most essential nutrients to sustain health. The problem is that too many people consume refined table salt instead of natural sea salt and don't drink enough water (dehydration provokes the body to retain as much salt as possible).

From the page: " "This suggests that salt need and cravings may be linked to the same brain pathways as those related to drug addiction and abuse," Johnson said."

"Most people consume far too much salt" - ABSOLUTLY WRONG!!!!!! Very few people get enough salt. The problem is all of the salt most people consume is refined, treated salt void of all of its natural nutrition. And salt that is good for you, sea salt that his not been refined (just because it's sea salt doesn't mean it's not refined) is great for you for a multitude of reasons. I only new a very few people that get enough salt (the right kind). White salt is like white sugar.
