Potentially significant breakthrough

An extraordinary new scientific study, which for the first time documents marked improvement in Alzheimer's disease within minutes of administration of a therapeutic molecule, has just been published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation. This new study highlights the importance of certain soluble proteins, called cytokines, in Alzheimer's disease. The study focuses on one of these cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF), a critical component of the brain's immune system. Normally, TNF finely regulates the transmission of neural impulses in the brain. The authors hypothesized that elevated levels of TNF in Alzheimer's disease interfere with this regulation. To reduce elevated TNF, the authors gave patients an injection of an anti-TNF therapeutic called etanercept. Excess TNF-alpha has been documented in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with Alzheimer's. The new study documents a dramatic and unprecedented therapeutic effect in an Alzheimer's patient: improvement within minutes following delivery of perispinal etanercept, which is etanercept given by injection in the spine. Etanercept (trade name Enbrel) binds and inactivates excess TNF. Etanercept is FDA approved to treat a number of immune-mediated disorders and is used off label in the study. The use of anti-TNF therapeutics as a new treatment choice for many diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and potentially even Alzheimerâ€s, was recently chosen as one of the top 10 health stories of 2007 by the Harvard Health Letter.

Cool. I've put this up before, but it's so cool. Help for not only Alzhelmers but hopefully, Parkinsons, M.S. etc. From this article. ScienceDaily (Jan. 9, 2008) -- An extraordinary new scientific study, which for the first time documents marked improvement in Alzheimer's disease within minutes of administration of a therapeutic molecule, has just been published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation. Thanks, 'mcdunc'.

I suffer from psoriatic arthritis to the point where some days I can hardly bend over...this Enbrel is amazing stuff---it takes away the horrible pain in my joints.
Unfortunately, I was being screened for tuberculosis before I could go back on Enbrel. I suffered a miscarriage in September, which was caused by cancer of the placenta, and so the Enbrel had to be stopped. My dermatologist did a skin test on me and the results came back positive for TB...
I will now have to forfeit the use of this wonder-drug Enbrel, because it lowered my resistance to illness and infection so much that I now have one of the most horrible diseases around. I am in favor of Enbrel, but it lowers the immune system to that of an AIDs patient, which is why I was unable to fight off any cold or bug that came my way, including the tuberculosis.
Enteracepts (there are a few others besides Enbrel) are very expensive, but this is due to the fact that A) it is a biologic, therefore it must be harveted and is not man-made, and B) the costs to research this drug are enormous, but well worth it if it does indeed fight Alzheimers (in minutes, as the text claims) so I am sort of on the fence about Enbrel... It lowers your resistance to disease, so it can be harmful to your health, but I told my dermatologist I would rather get lymphoma (the usual awful mess that Enbrel can create) and die knowing that I had a few good years without horrible patchy scales on my arms, severe and debilitating joint pain, and migraines (yes, Enbrel seemed to ward off my chronic migraine condition) and even my dull, constant neurological pain.

This could be a great breakthrough. My mother suffers from Alzheimer's. How wonderful it would be to get her back.
