- I'm very conflicted about complex systems as a unique scientific discipline. To be fair, I use many techniques attributed to complex systems in my own research, have taken courses in complex systems, and gone to major conferences in the field. The failure of the discipline to define it's major conceptual elements (complexity and emergence) that differentiate it from the older, less sexy but more formally established systems theory is problematic. But even if it isn't a field proper it has been a crucible for the development of provocative assertions and powerful methods.

elif rated 26 months ago- These days I'm reading the book Complexity by Waldrop. It's about complexity and the story on how this institute is started. It's very impressive.

DrPinky rated 34 months ago- Great resource for cutting edge economics (of all things).

Ragnar688 rated 42 months ago- If there ever was an Atlantis, this is its modern incarnation.

endi rated 45 months ago- The mother lode of complexity research.

PsiKik rated 47 months ago- From the page: "The Santa Fe Institute is devoted to creating a new kind of scientific research community, one emphasizing multidisciplinary collaboration in pursuit of understanding the common themes that arise in natural, artificial, and social systems. This unique scientific enterprise attempts to uncover the mechanisms that underlie the deep simplicity present in our complex world."

NGene rated 52 months ago- So this is the place Murray Gell-Mann talks about in his book.

gmc rated 53 months ago- "The Santa Fe Institute is a private, non-profit, multidisciplinary research and education center, founded in 1984. Since its founding SFI has devoted itself to creating a new kind of scientific research community, pursuing emerging science."
