Dreadnought discovered 22 months ago- From the page: "Increasingly, Americans will come to believe that the only people hard-headed enough to fight the religious lunatics of the Muslim world are the religious lunatics of the West. Indeed, it is telling that the people who speak with the greatest moral clarity about the current wars in the Middle East are members of the Christian right, whose infatuation with biblical prophecy is nearly as troubling as the ideology of our enemies. Religious dogmatism is now playing both sides of the board in a very dangerous game. While liberals should be the ones pointing the way beyond this Iron Age madness, they are rendering themselves increasingly irrelevant. Being generally reasonable and tolerant of diversity, liberals should be especially sensitive to the dangers of religious literalism. But they aren%u2019t. The same failure of liberalism is evident in Western Europe, where the dogma of multiculturalism has left a secular Europe very slow to address the looming problem of religious extremism among its immigrants. The people who speak most sensibly about the threat that Islam poses to Europe are actually fascists. To say that this does not bode well for liberalism is an understatement: It does not bode well for the future of civilization."

rationale rated 2 months ago- So I began reading about Sam Harris on wikipedia. At first I was like "Whoa, this individual is radically superb." I read about how he underwent a mental transformation after using ecstasy, and how he became involved with Buddhism and meditation. I read about the most well-known aspect of him - he's a rationalist, an atheist, - that is, someone who doesn't believe in the invisible, floating, omniscient creature that controls your every action, known as God. I read about how he wants drug legalization, is in favor of gay marriage, wants to tax the wealth more and is in general, awesome. (read: these are all policies I am in favor of) So if you are an atheist and a progressive liberal like myself you can imagine my unabashed glee at discovering such a phenomenal individual. Then I got to his Islam-bashing, and needless to say, I was like: "shit." I even contemplated crying for a brief moment. He is intolerant of religious belief. I think religious belief is irrational, and destructive. But I also do not deny that religion is positive in some aspects, and I don't make the mistake of assuming that Islam is an evil religion just because the Koran is violent in a literal sense. When you judge a religion, you don't just judge the text- you judge the people. And there are a boatload of descent Muslims. Secondly, I became increasingly disturbed when what was my equivalent of a Jesus-figure when I first started reading started to meld into someone who I became not-so-fond of. It turns out that Sam Harris, despite his intellect, is still irrational enough to believe that Bush "screwed up" in Iraq - that it was all a "big mistake." No, you dumbass motherfucker, it wasn't a mistake, it is FUCKING CRIMINAL. When you chock the murderous policies of the neoconservatives that occupy the U.S. government to mere "incompetence" you remove a fucking shitload of the blame. So in conclusion, I approve of Harris' liberal domestic policy views - wants to decriminalize drugs, allow gay marriage, et cetera. But when it comes to foreign policy it seems like he's swallowed every bullshit propaganda line of the U.S. government. And while I am proud to be an atheist, his militant anti-Islam brand of atheism (similar to Christopher Hitchens in this regard), is not something I subscribe to or approve of.

- The end of liberalism? Hopefully. But this guy needs to get a few more clues. Taxing people disincentivizes hard work and innovation. Gay people should be able to get married...if they want the hassles and bullshit that come along with that outdated institution. By the way, I am no conservative. I am a Capitalist.
