matthewbhere rated 9 months ago- I think Sam makes a good point. Atheism has an unfortunate stigma, that could turn off many people, no matter how good the argument the Atheist is making. Besides, I've always had an issue with the world Atheism, which when examined closely, simple means "not a theist." One shouldn't define oneself as being the antithesis of one supernatural idea. I've always thought it's better for an Atheist to define himself by what he DOES believe, and not by what he DOES NOT. I prefer terms like, Rationalist, or Naturalist to describe my view of the world. They are both more accurate, and less stigma-ridden. (thanks BluePeriphery)

BluePeriphery rated 9 months ago- He makes an excellent point.

eumaledictio rated 9 months ago- Okay, so I was at this conference and my only though to other people's reaction was, "these people are pathetic if they NEED to belong to a club to validate their beliefs." We don't need a name, it is just convenient sometimes. Usually I won't bring up that I'm an atheist. I WILL comment that I don't believe there is any such thing as a god. I'm very upfront about it. Sam Harris' speech was excellent and completely logical. The people in the audience that argued this were pathetic. They were the weird people in the building. I know that is mean to say, but a good amount of them (all of the grumblers around me) were the kinds of people you would expect to be very religious because it could give meaning to their meaningless lives (because they look inbred or just flat out ugly). But since they can't force themselves to pretend to believe in a god, they look for some kind of group that can replace their church and support them regardless of how icky people that don't know them think they are. I am a very blunt person. These people grossed me out because it made them look pathetic, weak, and whiny.

androidny rated 9 months ago- Sam Harris makes an excellent point in the cause of Free Thinking. From the page: My point, with respect to the term "atheist" (or any other), is that the use of a label invites a variety of misunderstandings that are harmful to our cause. There are many people in this country who do not believe in God and who understand that there is conflict between science and religion, but who do not feel the slightest inclination to join an atheist group or to label themselves in opposition to religion.

- Usually i think Harris' writing is excellent but i think he's off the mark here. He creates a false dichotomy with his press conference test. I think PZ Meyers response to this article sums it up well here.

ryuhaka rated 9 months ago- Nice

TheHunter234 rated 9 months ago- More a statement about the rhetorical effectiveness of choosing terms based on the audience you're speaking to, but a good point nonetheless: you can separate yourself from the stigma that surrounds atheism, thus becoming more effective in promoting your ideas, yet you won't necessarily be compromising your beliefs.
