Shedding some light on Ubuntu's dependency on Debian.

Its seems no one remembers the dark times before Ubuntu arrived on the debian scene: Long periods between updates, confusing, cluttered text-based installs, almost no gui package managers. Ubuntu forced developers to make packages more accessible or simply be left behind. For a distro that's supposed to be just a pretty dress on top of Debian its still far easier to install and maintain in my book.

I agree that Ubuntu is dependent on Debian, but the "giving little back" bit is rather ridiculous. It's open source, Debian devs can get any of the changes Ubuntu devs have made anytime they want to.

I have used various versions of linux for the past 7 years. I am by no means an accomplished user. I have noticed one thing about most computer users no matter what operating system they just want the THING TO WORK without having to deal with the nuts and bolts. They want to work, play games, surf the internet, check their email. Most people these days dont know anything about how their cars work either they just add gas, oil and turn the key either it works or it does not.
