  • Rands In Repose: The Nerd Handbook

From the page: "Your nerd has built himself a cave. Iâ€ve written about The Cave elsewhere, but here are the basics. The Cave is designed to allow your nerd to do his favorite thing, which is working on the project. If you want to understand your nerd, stare long and hard at his Cave. How... more

Hehe, this was amusing. Oddly accurate, but written in a way that isn't too possessive or offensive.

TheFinalBob says: "If you thumb this down, you're probably running IE, have popups flashing even though you installed Antivirus 2009, and wondering what's going on."He's wrong. i thumb this down because i think a guide to reducing people to objects in order to manipulate them is the most disgustingly self-centered thing to write. The author keeps writing "your nerd" as though he is property. The article describes a method of warping "your nerd's" perception of what you like so he thinks it's something he likes, and thus will be more willing to go along with your shit. The author writes that you should look into your nerd's "cave" to see what he does and who he is not so you can be closer to him, but so you can manipulate him easier.Halfway down the article it says: "If you're still reading, then I'm thinking that your nerd is worth keeping. Even though he's apt to vanish for hours, has a strange sense of humor, doesn't like you touching his stuff, and often doesn't listen when you're talking directly at him, he's a keeper. Go figure."Does the author think a reader is going to quit halfway through the article, decide that her (again - property) nerd is too much work, and then dump him? That shows what a shallow audience this is targeting. The whole thing is written with a "he's a nerd, but I guess he'll do" sort of mentality.i find this article shallow, manipulative, and vomit-inducing. Thumbs way down.

I enjoy reading people's opinions and seeing what goes on in their heads. So this is a neat read.

This is great, accurate and awesome. If you thumb this down, you're probably running IE, have popups flashing even though you installed Antivirus 2009, and wondering what's going on.
