Haven't tried this, but I do want a time series analysis system and this says that it can do that. It is also available as an add on to open office.

I had to do a school project usin R. It was quite cool actually. We had to create a package of programs made to analyse DNA chains. We had to program functions to manipulate DNA microarrays, tables with gene infromation. I loved to do it.

R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows and MacOS. To download R, please choose your preferred CRAN mirror.

Well supported, with books, documentation, conferences and a wiki; R is a full featured, mature open source statistical analysis package. From the page: "R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows and MacOS."

R is a system for statistical computation and visualization. I have lately been learning R for the purpose of plotting results of my particle filter. R seems to serve this purpose very well. Its interface reminds me of Matlab. Like Matlab, it's programming intensive. My initial impression is that the visualization part might be handled better, but it's worse in linear algebra (no surprise). For an open source project, it seems to be well documented, and lots of books etc. are available. I can recommend it for anybody into statistics.

"R is a system for statistical computation and graphics. It consists of a language plus a run-time environment with graphics, a debugger, access to certain system functions, and the ability to run programs stored in script files. (...) It is free software distributed under a GNU-style copyleft, and an official part of the GNU project ("GNU S")."

I'm certainly not a statistician, so I will probably never use this software to its fullest. But I do like to use it for making graphs.
