Quantum Consciousness . Stuart Hameroff

Warning Warning Warning Any time I see the word quantum followed by anything other than mechanics, my bozo warning goes off. Quantum mechanics is a very complex area of physics and mathematics which relates to things far too small to be observed by normal means. Because it is odd and compli...

From the page: "Consciousness defines our existence and reality, but the mechanism by which the brain generates thoughts and feelings remains unknown. Most explanations portray the brain as a computer, with nerve cells ("neurons") and their synaptic connections acting as simple switches. However computation alone cannot explain why we have feelings and awareness, an "inner life." We also don't know if our conscious perceptions accurately portray the external world. "

If you aren't familliar with any neuroscience literature then this might appear bunk to you. - This observation is rather interesting though in a discussion of academia and the need for inter-diciplinary research. Many people who have encountered quantum mechanics through a background in engineering and mathmatics will look at this and go, yea right! "The brain is a warm, wet thing, how can there be quantum superposition" But, if you understand the recent history of neuroscience and the functional mechanisms involved within anesthetics, this isn't really far fetched at all. The most comprehensive overview of Penrose and Hammeroff's work is outlined in ->

Warning Warning Warning Any time I see the word quantum followed by anything other than mechanics, my bozo warning goes off. Quantum mechanics is a very complex area of physics and mathematics which relates to things far too small to be observed by normal means. Because it is odd and complicated, it is often used incorrectly to explain other things which are odd and complicated, but which have nothing to do with quantum theory. If you truly understand quantum mechanics, please feel free to disagree with me, but if you keep hearing people use it to explain things which otherwise make no sense, don't take their word for it. Just because an idea seems neat is not enough to make it true. Wikipedia on Quantum Mechanics
