Here's the inside scoop on cracking the code: Each sticker is labeled with a four- or five-digit code called a Price Look-Up number, which speeds up scanning for grocery store cashiers. But there's more to the sticker than meets the eye. It also can reveal how the produce was grown: Five digits beginning with a 9: organic Five digits beginning with an 8: genetically modified Four digits beginning with a 3 or 4: conventionally grown You may notice the names of countries dotting the skins of apples, tomatoes and other produce. Kathy Means, vice president of government relations at the Produce Marketing Association, says about 60% of the most popular fruits and vegetables currently are labeled with their country of origin, and she expects you'll see more of this in the future."
