Excellent Photoshop tutorial on the use of blending modes. Layer interaction is determined by the blending mode of the upper layer.

I never knew about most of this! Something I can try out new in photoshop. :) I used nearly every one of these for single layers.

Blending modes in Photoshop. As the author admits it's mostly suck it and see to learn. But this is the best explanation I've seen for ages. The only trouble is with most blends it depends on the images in the layers and I defy anyone to forecast what will happen. This is good page of info though and I quote: "Blending modes are split into 6 different sections. The Basic ones replace the base pixels, the Darken ones darken the base pixels, the Lighten ones lighten them, the Contrast ones increase or decrease overall contrast, the Comparative ones invert the base colour and the HSL modes apply a specific colour component. Some blending modes need a bit of opacity tweaking in order to get the best effect. As with a lot of Photoshop's options, experimentation is the only real way to get a thorough understanding."

Excellent. Personally I use Soft Light and Overlay. That's it.
