Important news: the following recently came to the attention of BCPWA. Please distribute widely.
The Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance (Welfare) and the Ministry of Children and Families are using Facebook, MySpace and other public domains to find evidence of:
* Undisclosed co-habitation (living with someone)
* Spending beyond what is provided by the ministry
* Casual employment
* Leaving the province for more than 30 days
* Gifts, pets and other income
Information posted on sites like Facebook is not private!
Thanks Patty http://pepermint-patty.stumbleupon.com/ for the clue. I eschew the Facebook and am addicted to SU and I don't care. Everybody's got something to hide except me and my monkey (John Lennon).

- They can see my facebook if they want. :( Always good to catch those on welfare spending their notsohardearned money inappropriately.
 NC2K rated 11 months agocanada - Perfect! I'm all in favour of any tools that can be used to combat abuse of social assistance programs and saving all of us tax payers hard earned money.
 beauxeaux rated 11 months agocanada - Popularity carries a big pricetag: The Facebook Trap...
 stumbleideafarm rated 11 months agocanada - Be aware. Be very aware!
 pepermint-patty rated 11 months agocanada - The reality, is that everyone should know by now that anything anyone posts, even if it's considered 'private', is not. NOTHING IS! If someone really wants to find out info on any person's activity on the net and their postings, it can be done, easily. Don't post because of ego getting in the way!
Anyway, I can't believe that the government is that well organized to go through Facebook, etc., to find evidence and check-up on their clients, unless they are specifically investigating someone.

- Do not be surprised. Federal and provincial jurisdictions scan local papers (want ads, employment ads, obits), cross reference with CRA etc. to keep tabs on those using their services. They have been doing this for years.
Sandsman19 is correct - this is not only used for those on welfare - think ALL government services and programs provided by both levels of government. Considering the wheels of government move so slowly, I am surprised they caught on this fast. Summer students must have brought it to their attention - bastards. Caution to stumblers who are civil servants - review your conflict of interest guidelines and be careful.
 Sandsman19 rated 11 months agocanada - This is just wrong ... a Canadian provincial government using Facebook, MySpace and other public forums, likely including StumbleUpon, to collect personal information that can be used as evidence against unwitting citizens. For the welfare-bashers who think this only applies to welfare cheats, try to consider the wider ramifications...
 pathsofrhythm rated 11 months ago- Yay, let's help welfare cheats scam the system
