No discussion of magic realism will be complete without mentioning the works of Rob Gonsalves. He is a great Canadian magic realist. Gonsalves injects a sense of magic into realistic scenes. His work is an attempt to represent human beings desire to believe the impossible. I would say his style is "shaken, not stirred" variety of Martini (the way Bond wants it). BTW, a shaken martini contains less hydrogen peroxide as the shaking action deactivates the gas in the liquor, and thus is argued to be healthier than the stirred versions. (link here). I wish I can post all his works, but had to limit to just a couple. Get spooked by his magic right here
Delightfully creative!!!
Exquisite!!!

bric9 rated 22 months ago- First posted June 2,2006 ... thought I'd bring it up again. There is a book out, "for young readers" but I had to pick it up when I saw it; it was my first introduction to this artist. The apt and fitting title is "Imagine a Night" and there is a short piece of text by Sarah Thompson with each image. Ron Gonsalves "worlds within worlds"

- Combine the styles of M.C. Escher, Maxfield Parrish, and N.C.Wyeth, then filter them through a child's imagination and you might get something close to Rob Gonsalves' paintings. As a child I would sometimes climb a tree or get on the roof of a building and imagine these kinds of images. Very nice!
