prison experiment studies human psychology

Scary stuff. I'm no psychologist, but I do wonder what difference the background and experience of the participants made: I believe some of the most inhumane treatment dealt out in the Nazi prison camps was at the hand of educated, urbane, middle class nazis.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Zimbardo. He never published his SPE results in a peer-reviewed journal, and he treats alternative theories with disregard, preferring to respond with deception and ad hominem attacks. He is the psychologist equivalent of the guy who says he can do a 100 pull-ups but declines to demonstrate because he 'doesn't feel like it.' IMHO he is a poor scientist. For an excellent counter-explanation to the SPE, see Reicher, S. D., & Haslam, S. A. (2006). Rethinking the social psychology of tyranny: The BBC Prison Study. British Journal of Social Psychology, 45, 1-40. (try Google Scholar.)

Zimbardo's infamous prison study A mock prison in the basement of Stanford university was the location of what was intended to be a two week study to find out how ordinary good people behave in a prison situation. The research was stopped after six days. This site gives details and pictures of what happened.

in the related links section you will find reference to a bbc copy of this famous experiment which was eventually halted. What I found most fascinating was how the group slowly went through all forms of government from communism to fascism. eventually when dictatorship held sway and signs of mdness emerged it was stopped

Among the most interesting (and compelling) stories I have read on the web. A must read for the insight into the 'heart of darkness'.
