There's a billion light-year hole in the Universe, devoid of stars, matter and dark matter. Though it's still dwarfed by the hole in my heart...sorry, that was lame.

From the page: "University of Minnesota astronomers have found an enormous hole in the Universe, nearly a billion light-years across, empty of both normal matter such as stars, galaxies and gas, as well as the mysterious, unseen 'dark matter.' While earlier studies have shown holes, or voids, in the large-scale structure of the Universe, this new discovery dwarfs them all.

"'Not only has no one ever found a void this big, but we never even expected to find one this size,' said Lawrence Rudnick of the University of Minnesota astronomy professor. Rudnick, along with grad student Shea Brown and associate professor Liliya Williams, also of the University of Minnesota, reported their findings in a paper accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal."

Ok, astronomers have found apparently an enormous hole in the Universe... That means that they've found a WMAP Cold Spot, where WMAP = Wilkinson Microwave Anisotopy Probe, and they've done it with the WMAP satellite launched by NASA in 2001. The "hole" has been detected thanks to the Cosmic Microwave Background, which is measured as a temperature, and in the hole is lower than anywhere else in normal space. The WMAP satellite measures temperature differences in the CMB that are only millionths of a degree.

Anyway, this fact needs to be confirmed with other observations before thinking about an interpretation for the presence of a hole.

I think they've found bush's brain at last. "We always knew there were voids in space - areas which hold no stars, no matter, not even the mysterious dark matter that astronomers use to fix their math. But this one beats all: nearly a billion light-years wide, this void is not only larger than any found before, it's larger than any void that anyone thought could exist. "What we've found is not normal, . . ." This is news.

I hear after years of research the most common colour in the universe is beige. See what influence old people have...
