EclecticMoth rated 14 months ago- The Kingdom of Ends - Living Under the Rule of Categorical Imperative The Kingdom of Ends is not another suburb or bedroom community whose citizens trundle off by day into the city' and return home in the evening to their perfect little safe harbor away from the sordid masses. No, The Kingdom of Ends is a community where there is no such group or demographic framed as the sordid masses.' It would not or could not exist there. In this community, an idyllic community, the source and subject of all laws are the inhabitants. You will not find the citizens living out the concept of keeping up with the Jones, for here in this community no one gains material goods or positions with the intent of being superior to another. There is no need to wield power over another nor is there a desire to do so. Each is the end, and no one feels they are merely the means to an end, nor treats others as the means to their own ends. Rather than strive for supremacy over their neighbors the populace fulfills its moral duty and cares for the well being of all. All actions are those of good will. Each citizen in the Kingdom of Ends is a subject, a legislator and a sovereign. The laws are universal. The foundation for all laws created is "Act always on such a maxim as thou canst at the same time will to be a universal law"; this is the sole condition under which a will can never contradict itself; and such an imperative is categorical. (Kant 1991). Behavior in this kingdom is done for the sake of the act itself and not as a means to some other end or gain. A man is honest to be honest not to be perceived as honest and therefore be sought after as an honest merchant, enriching himself through this perception. Good is not done so that one feels good about doing it, Good is done to do Good, and it is the end not the means. Murder doesn't exist because for one to commit this action it would follow that all can commit this action creating a downfall of the kingdom itself, which would be self-contradictory and unreasonable and most importantly, it would not hold up as a universal law. In the Kingdom of Ends you will not find children murdering each other for the gain of a ten-dollar vial of crack, you will not find mothers stuffing a newborn into a garbage can, or jets flying with deadly hateful purpose into buildings on a clear bright September morning. There is no need for retaliation or vengeance against an enemy for there are no enemies. In this kingdom the waters run clear, the sky is free of pollution; the environment is protected under the categorical imperative. If this kingdom does not exist in reality perhaps we would come closer to it if we acted as if it could. Perhaps a vision of it might shimmer for us if we would behave as if it did with no ifs, ands or buts but categorically and imperatively so. A good first step for everyone would be to follow The Golden Rule. A simpler version of Immanuel Kant's Categorical Imperative, it is something we can all understand without much burden to our intellects; treat others only in ways that you're willing to be treated in the same exact situation.
