Interesting article explaining among others the "one drop rule", according to which anyone with any African in their ancestry were automatically deemed black in the united-States.

Q: What makes you black in the US. A half...a quarter..or mebbe one eighth African genes. The astonishing answer is 'one drop' of black blood. This fascinating PBS site looks into the story of Jefferson, slavery and race.

From the page: "To be considered black in the United States not even half of one's ancestry must be African black. But will one-fourth do, or one-eighth, or less? The nation's answer to the question 'Who is black?" has long been that a black is any person with any known African black ancestry."

Oh, God, this is the story of my life. I am a French Creole, and considered something of a mix, somehow, in Louisiana's racially stilted history...This racism, this unbreakable mold, is dividing our country long after these terms were generally considered to be antiquated... How sad that we still look at someone's color/features/hair and use it as a reason to know them or not---love them or not---procreate with them or not. The Qur'an says that God created us of different colors and tones so that we might know one another. Maybe it would be a good thing to take His advice.
