Interesting essay by Paul Graham about the lies we tell children -- the why we do it to the effects it has. Interesting.

From the page: "It's not enough to consider your mind a blank slate. You have to consciously erase it."

"Adults lie constantly to kids. I'm not saying we should stop, but I think we should at least examine which lies we tell and why."

Here's a secret: there's no necessary lies. You have to be insane to lie to your kids for any reason. Raising kids by hiding the truth is like trying to grow watermelons by blowing up schools. Completely insane. Parents think it's cute? They think they're protecting their kids? Mentally retarded people are slow to understand truth. You don't have to spend your parenthood lying--there's easier ways to produce retarded kids. Interestingly, lying to your kids is the way that doesn't land you in prison or a padded room. If you want retarded kids, I recommend lying to them as much as possible.

From the page: "I remember that feeling. By 15 I was convinced the world was corrupt from end to end. That's why movies like The Matrix have such resonance. Every kid grows up in a fake world. In a way it would be easier if the forces behind it were as clearly differentiated as a bunch of aliens, and one could make a clean break just by taking a pill."

As a parent, this is particularly thought provoking.

"Adults lie constantly to kids. I'm not saying we should stop, but I think we should at least examine which lies we tell and why. There may also be a benefit to us. We were all lied to as kids, and some of the lies we were told still affect us. So by studying the ways adults lie to kids, we may be able to clear our heads of lies we were told."
