The reason is that your images can show up in Google image search. Let's say your blog is about hummingbirds (I don't know why that word popped into my head). Someone searching for a picture of a hummingbird on Google image search will get a whole page of pictures of hummingbirds. If they click on one that they like, they will be sent to a page with Google's thumbnail of the image on top, and the page where it appears on the bottom.
