Should anyone think that a warmer climate may be a good thing then think again! It is a downward spiral that will affect us all ultimately. Most countries in the World have major settlements along the coasts or on river plains and these are all at risk as is our whole way of life. Even major... more

From the page: "Melting Arctic Sea-Ice makes treacherous North-East Passage transit a breeze" And our governments will continue to do nothing.

"...due to climate change, it is now possible to challenge the passage in one summer in a sailboat, without the support of an icebreaker." This is a powerful way to show the unmistakable effects of climate change, especially through photos and blog entries during their voyage. Good luck.

I took a cruise to Alaska a couple of years ago and it was abundantly evident that either we are in an amazingly unusual weather anomoly or that global warming is real. The question is, what do we do about it?

From the page: "The Arctic is melting fast. The summer sea ice extent has decreased by 40 percent since the 70s and may be completely gone within a generation. WWF supports the expedition to document the state of the environment and highlight impacts of climate change on the arctic ecosystems, and importantly to communicate the need for urgent action to address greenhouse gas emissions at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December.

Should anyone think that a warmer climate may be a good thing then think again! It is a downward spiral that will affect us all ultimately. Most countries in the World have major settlements along the coasts or on river plains and these are all at risk as is our whole way of life. Even major cities like London in the UK are having to address encroachment by the sea. Sewage systems will fail as the whole infrastructure of society as we know it fails comprehensively. We are fiddling as Rome burns - no one will be immune. It is time for comprehensive changes - but even then they may come far too late. Our past inaction is about to bite us in the backside! Such enormity will make our current huge economic woes merely look like a kids' tea party! Sobering huh? Sailing the northeast passage without the use of an icebreaker - expeditions like this are important to highlight the impact of climate change.
