darkali discovered 24 months ago- OSSEC HIDS is an Open Source Host-based Intrusion Detection System. It performs log analysis, integrity checking, rootkit detection, time-based alerting and active response.

- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host-based_intrusion_detection_system So... I think I know what it does... but not really. I bet if you knew what it did though, it'd be really useful!!
