Some excellent pics of Iceland here, found at andsimple's site, courtesy of xineann's directions. Something that particularly struck William Morris, used to holidaying on the south coast of England, was the understated way rocks just give way unannounced to sea in Iceland and Norway. Lacking the high drama of the white cliffs of Dover or the graded transition of sandy shores shelving seaward, the contrast is all the more stark. In a way it is this same understatedness in Norse saga -- most laconic, most ironic when describing events of high pathos and drama -- that he comes to love most and which supplied him and subsequent poets (notably Auden, Hopkins and Heaney) with that touch of ice in the heart which is a salutary corrective to Victorian sentiment.
