OpenStreetMap is a free editable map of the whole world. It is made by people like you. OpenStreetMap allows you to view, edit and use geographical data in a collaborative way from anywhere on Earth. OpenStreetMap's hosting is kindly supported by the UCL VR Centre and bytemark.

Good excuse to get out there with a GPS and fill in the gaps around where you live. Listen to FLOSS weekly, episode http://twit.tv/floss81 for a great interview... the Wiki has instructions on adding your own contributions. Illustrates the power of open source.

A great open-source mapping project that can be contributed to by anyone who is interested in doing so.

It's our world. We map it. This is a fantastic project. I'm sick of shelling out hundreds of Euros to keep my current GPS navigator maps updated. These maps can be installed on Garmin GPS navigators, and are entirely free. With some notable exceptions, OpenStreetMap is currently lacking in coverage, but once enough people join the mapping effort, it may prove to be more accurate, more detailed, and more up to date than any paid map. I've joined the mapping efforts and have added miles of cycleway, footway, and highway already.
