From the page: " The mission of the Institute for OneWorld Health is to advance global health by developing effective and affordable new medicines for infectious diseases that disproportionately affect people in the developing world."

If you'd like to donate some $, this would be a great company to send some to!

This seems like such a wonderful organization. Instead of focusing on making drugs that are the most profitable yet less beneficial to society (hello, Viagra!) One World Health is a nonprofit and can work towards helping those who need it the most. Thanks to KingBoy for passing this page along.

The Institute for OneWorld Health

A Nonprofit Pharmaceutical Company

The mission of the Institute for OneWorld Health is to advance global health by developing effective and affordable new medicines for infectious diseases that disproportionately affect people in the developing world.

"Nonprofit Pharmaceutical Company" should cause a double-take. This is a remarkable organisation and, I hope, a trend-setting one.

Just read an interesting article (Esquire, 12/05) on OWH's CEO, Victoria Hale. Her company's mission is to make necessary phamaceuticals available to developing countries on the basis of need rather than financial advancement for her company. Yeah! Imagine that! People who actually NEED drugs, would, like, get them! One method OWH uses is researching drugs that have been shelved (or not aggressively marketed) by their developers due to the fact that providing treatment for, say, malaria, isn't profitable enough for them. Kind of hard to turn a profit when the people who need it most probably wouldn't see $1.50 USD in a month, nevermind per dose. And everyone knows that massively solvent big Pharma couldn't POSSIBLY afford to reduce profits, or *gourd forbid!* their own salaries. Nice to know that there's someone out there thinking about people before profit.
