From the page: "The major Democratic candidates and the major Republican candidates are not questioning these things. The laws have already been passed and the mechanisms in place. Meanwhile the people are silent and compliant. Have you ever wondered how the Naziā€s were allowed to subjugate the German People? You need not wonder any longer. It has happened to the American People now too. The terrorists have won. If like President Bush claims, they hate us for our freedom, they need hate us any longer. We have no freedom to hate us for."

The State exists for the benefit of the individual to live within family units and broader society. The individuals surrender part of their independence to the State in return for security - the State then acquires the authority use force against the individual to ensure the benefit of broader society. Governments have, in many States, turned the tables - the individual exists to serve the State instead of the other way round. The citizens delegate their security tasks to the State - the practice now, it appears, is that the citizens abdicate responsibility for holding the governments to account. To do this they need to be aware of events and developments.

""These concerns are everywhere. I see them in articles, in e-mails, in telephone conversations and in the media. If this has indeed taken place, how was it done?"" ============================================================== >>>>> The first thing to remember is that it has not really "taken place" here, not yet. But what I see is unsettling. The fact that I am a little uncomfortable attaching this post to my identity says something... **Look to Augustus for the answer to this question.** Hitler also. Everything they did (that people knew about) was technically "legal". Germany was the most liberal country in the world! Lets not go there... just yet at least. Instead, let look at Rome. Forgive me for it has been a long time since I read much about Rome. Rome had a republican tradition 500 years long! How could it happen there? Honestly, it was the consolidation of wealth. Most of the land in the known world became consolidated into the hands of just a few families. The civic infrastructure was partly dependent on small landed farmers with a stake in the outcome. Demagoguery and special interests brought the whole thing down. The Senate could NOT say no to the people and the state went bankrupt. Private mercenaries (think military contractors) took over the volunteer and draft service. Politicians pillaged the subjected nations not living in Rome to finance the mass distractions. Citizens lost interest in participation; they only wanted to see bread and games. Augustus bailed out the state treasury with his personal funds and slowly bent the constitutional interpretations. All of the checks and balances (and they were extensive) remained intact but slowly lost their teeth. And people adjusted to it like the proverbial frog cooking in slowly heated water!

Glad I'm not American, though Finland has its kinks, too.

Americans no Longer Question Authority. A thought-provoking article by Timothy V. Gatto. Believe me, Americans need to have their thoughts provoked before the US is no longer recognizable. Thanks to Infojnkee for this. http://infojnkee.stumbleupon.com/ Timothy V. Gatto Have we passed the point of no return in this country? Has the right engineered such a change in our laws that nothing can be done to bring the country back from an Orwellian State that exists to serve the oligarchy and has stripped the common man of his basic unalienable rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Has the Federal government become so powerful that it can imprison people for dissent? Can this government really designate anyone it wished a terrorist or a terrorist sympathizer and prosecute him or her without the benefit of due process? Have we really come to this point? Some believe we have. There are some that honestly believe that America has no safeguards for civil liberties. These people believe that the right of free speech and the rights guaranteed us under the Constitution have been replaced by new laws that abridge our expectations of privacy, our right to dissent, and our right to challenge our government in a court of law to be decided by a jury of our peers. These concerns are everywhere. I see them in articles, in e-mails, in telephone conversations and in the media. If this has indeed taken place, how was it done? Has the global war on terrorism taken such a priority in this nation that it now infringes on our personal freedom? If this is the case, can we ever get back what we have lost?

From the page: "The point I am making here is that the government has indeed overstepped its authority. The people that worry about whether or not we have reached the point of no return are asking a reasonable question. "
