A small monitor on a shelf in its bare, cramped interior showed video from the four cameras anchored atop the machine, which do not pan, tilt or zoom. (On the new units, two of the cameras will be able to do this.)

"To me, the best part is its omnipresence," said Inspector James McCarthy, who stood beside the machine, his hands in his overcoat pockets. "People that are looking to do something bad can see it from a couple of blocks away."
