'nother barbaric, so-called "honor killing", this time in India -- the victims here were of the same gotra (roughly, "lineage" or "clan"), and so their relationship was forbidden under an incest taboo that considered them immediate kin

From the page: "We are not ashamed of it, absolutely not, we have the honor of doing the village proud," he said. Somehow women pay the price for honor. It's way past time for a change.

this has been a common problem in Haryana. the good thing is that the government has really cracked down on it and there are generally less instances of this. I've actually visited people in these tiny villages and they are just so isolated from the rest of the country...im not sure if they feel safe to do whatever they please because of the isolation or if they do it because they've brainwashed themselves...

In a previous post to my SU blog I noted that I live a very short distance from where the mortal remains of a young woman was found in a shallow grave. Every time I pass the place I think of her and total fail to understand why someone would kill, or condone the killing of a child that I assume that they loved, because of "honour". Sadly no one has yet been brought to justice for her death.

Beyond disturbing: "The bodies of [pregnant] Sunita Devi, 21, and her partner Jasbir Singh, 22, lie on the ground after they were killed by villagers in an "honour killing" in Ballah village in the northern Indian state of Haryana May 9, 2008. Growing economic opportunities for young people and lower castes in Haryana have made "love marriages" more common, experts say, and the violent repression of them has risen in tandem as upper caste Jat men fight to hold on to power, status and property."

Honor killings defined a man is worried about what someobne thinks about him and to save that precious, precious thing, he kills someone. Great.
