As the frightened girl began to lose consciousness, she turned to her mother and asked: "Promise you won't leave me, will you, Mummy?'' Mrs O'Bara promised her she wouldn't, and those final words to her daughter became the blueprint for her life: turning her every two hours so her daughter wouldn't develop bedsores; feeding her a mixture of baby food and powdered milk through a tube; administering insulin; playing music; reading books to Edwarda, who was once an avid reader; and keeping a watchful vigil by her bedside in the hope that one day her daughter would come to. "To me, she's almost awake. Sometimes I think I hear her speak,'' Mrs O'Bara once told The Miami Herald.

This is one of the most saddest, selfless true-life stories I've ever read. Made me cry.

This is ridiculous. I would have pulled the plug way sooner than 38 years. That's "mean" and "sad" to say, but that girl, if she ever does come out, is not going to be a healthy woman and just jump out of bed. Plus all the costs and LIFE (these people didn't live a life after their daughter went into a coma) I'm not saying don't give her a chance to come out, not saying pull the plug right away, or even trying to put a time on it. But almost 40 years????
