The first elephant I thought of was fairly generic: large, gray and wrinkled. When asked to think of a different elephant, I imagined a scarred and hulking creature with cracked tusks and tattered ears. One of his eyes was milky white. His hide was dotted with bullets and buckshot, but his ivory had remained his. This was no placid zoo elephant with a paintbrush in his trunk. He was a warrior of the Serengeti, and the gentle reputation of his species did nothing to conceal his restrained, but noble, savagery.
