These birds come with spring in the hill country and I miss their sharp call at sundown. They would come to the tree line at the bottom of the hill in the evening so I decided to try and see one for my self. The kids and dogs were busy so I slipped out the back door and slowly crept down the hill toward their call with a flash light in hand. Ever so quietly I placed each foot step and slowly I reach near the bottom when all of a sudden there was this loud,"HARK!" followed by two more. It was these beauties.... AXIS DEER They saw me first and ruined my my plan. I never did see a Whippoorwill up close, just listened to them. We fed the deer every evening and morning. The Axis run in herds of up to 30 and are not as shy as the native White Tail. They were imported here from Sri Lanka in the 30's and now over run the hill country. Atticus, our cat used to try and stalk them as though he were a lion. The deer would just stomp at him and bark! http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/AA/tca3.html
