That's "Inflammatory Bowel Disease"... not Irritable Bowel Disease. It can be easy to mix up IBD with IBS. Either way. I think it's amazing that a high school student could use her class to help her explore her own chronic illness. I was diagnosed at a similar age (but that was almost 20 years ago) and they know so much more now... treatments are really improving... but things are still often missed.

From the page: "Teen Outsmarts Doctors In Science Class" IBS is a "blanket term" for more than just 2 diseases and It is entirely plausible for doctors to carry out tests that are returned negative. Also Granulomas in the gut of people with Crohn's Disease can be so small and hard to detect that they can be overlooked. Sure, there could be and it seems likely that there is an element of exaggeration within the article it is NBC after all.

Proves the power and value of being an 'Unreasonable Patient'. Seven years of medical school, plus professional specialisation is nothing compared to the years of experience of being in your OWN body!

Let's clear up some of the bullshit from this story: Irritable bowel disease is a blanket term for two diseases - Crohn Disease, and ulcerative collitis. Any medical student (and therefore any doctor, and CERTAINLY any pathologist) can tell you that the basic histologic difference is the type of inflammation, either acute (ulcerative collitis) or chronic which forms granulomas (Crohn Disease). This is so basic that I do not believe for one second the physicians, especially multiple, didn't catch it. Either the reporter or the teen is embellishing this story so much that it is eye-gouging.

Just goes to show that nobody is quite as invested in your problems as yourself; even when they should have a very good reason to.
