The Hubble telescope found a ghostly ring of 'dark matter' while mapping a collision between two galaxies. The find was the most demonstrative of the impact and existence of something that's out there, we just don't know what . Dark matter can only be detected through gravitational lensing. We call it dark matter because we cannot see it, but we can see the effects it has on gravity. No particles of dark matter have ever been captured. Dark matter only seems to be detectable on supermassive, galactic scales. It may not be matter, as we understand it, at all. Ring of Dark Matter While most astronomers have long-suspected the presence and even measured pockets of dark matter, there hasn't been a great deal of large-scale evidence to support this mysterious type of matter's existence. That is, until now. Astronomers report the finding of a huge ring of dark matter using the Hubble Space Telescope in the cluster ZwCl0024+1652, the largest to date. Their results will be published in the June 1 issue of Astrophysical Journal. "This is the first time we have detected dark matter as having a unique structure that is different from the gas and galaxies in the cluster," said M. James Jee, an astronomer from Johns Hopkins University, in a statement. The ring is 2.6 million light-years across (that's really big), and was discovered in the cluster ZwCl0024+1652, located 5 billion light-years away from Earth. More about Dark Matter

Hubble Finds Ghostly Ring of Dark Matter This Hubble Space Telescope composite image shows a ghostly 'ring' of dark matter in the galaxy cluster Cl 0024+17.The most common substance in the universe is called dark matter. It doesn't shine or reflect light. We can't even see it. click on the pic to see a BIG version ! Amazing !
