A couple of space colony summer studies were conducted at NASA Ames in the 1970s. Colonies housing about 10,000 people were designed. A number of artistic renderings of the concepts were made. These have been converted to jpegs and are available as thumbnails, quarter page, full screen and publication quality images.

35 years ago, when I was about 8 years old, I assumed that I would be living in something like these; round about now. It seemed natural - and I am sure I was not unusual in having such assumptions. In fact I remember a teacher telling my class that the biggest problem, facing my generation, would be in finding ways to fill all the leisure time we would have as a result of living in a totally automated society. I feel cheated - by whom exactly, I am still not sure ;)

God I love it! What a great find. Brings back childhood memories for me - I remember these exact illustrations.
